I cannot say enough good things about the large bolster dog bed we bought for all three of our Golden Retrievers. They love them, we love them.
Once our first puppy had outgrown his starter bed it was time to get serious about a night time bed. As you can see, young pups ignore their beds and use the floor! It might be a bit risky to spend money on more dog beds!
We considered a large bolster dog bed alongside many other options. It was clear as puppy got to about 6 months of age that he liked sleeping with his head on a pillow. So what were our dog bed options?
Dog Bed Sizes
Dog beds pretty much come in all sizes and everything in between. There are hundreds of makers, prices are cheap to expensive. You can buy them from large retailers like Costco or Walmart as well as pet stores. You can buy them online too, consider Chewy, they have all sizes on offer. There are boutique made to order dog beds, outdoor product companies, the list is endless.
We decided at age 6 months we wanted to buy his a bed that would last for a few years at least. So we opted for a larger or extra large size to accommodate a 70lb dog.
Types of Dog Bed
Dog bed makers have become savvy. They understand that some dog breeds, prone to Arthritis would benefit from an Orthopedic dog bed. Golden Retriever and Labradors are two breeds that suffer from this disease, especially if they get overweight. I opted to look for orthopedic foam in my dog bed. At this early age it was more about comfort and while the foam is more expensive it was a cost I was willing to pay.
You can buy large dog beds that are circular, square, rectangular, raised off the floor, even shaped like a couch. Some have pillow ends or sides, others are simply flat. A large bolster dog bed would work best for Finlay as he was always lying against a pillow.
I need a bolster dog bed with removable cover. I highly recommend any dog bed must be washable, or the covers can come off to be washed. From dusty feet to night time accidents or drooling jowls, it will get dirty.
Choosing The Best Color
Any multi-colored pattern will show the dirt less than a single color. I needed something that was not too pale but not too dark. I also wanted a cover with good grade, reasonable thick fabric. Dogs claws can rip nylon so that was out. The best dog beds will withstand a reasonable amount of wear and tear and not rip.
I ended up with a shopping list. Large or extra large bed, thick fabric in a multi color fabric with memory orthopedic foam, likely 3 inches plus in depth. Now I have to go shopping. I did take a quick peak in my local pet store but the quality did not impress. I knew a better option was to search online.
Orvis Dog Beds
My search found Orvis dog beds. They offered an orthopedic bolster dog bed in my size option and had the perfect color blend.
I am a believer in you get what you pay for, so was willing to pay the price. The bolster on this dog bed looked thick, substantial. The foam was 3.25 inches thick. The cover comes off. I love that the interior foam mattress has an interior nylon cover protecting it from dampness or spills. The large size fits dogs 60-90lbs, perfect for Finlay.
The cover is made from furniture grade upholstery fabric. It’s quilted on the inside. It’s an open front so easy for dogs to walk in and out, plus legs can trail off the edge. The plus was to have Finlay’s name embroidered on the bolster. We chose a matching subtle color for the thread.
I cannot say enough good things about this bed. Finlay has been sleeping in it for almost 3 years now. There’s no wear noticeable, no stitching has come undone. The fabric is good at repelling his fur. The cover does not shrink when washed and it’s easy to take the cover off and put back on.
The bottom part has a zipper that lets you take out the bed pad. There’s another zipper behind the bolster to remove the pillow part. The zippers are tough ones too, suitable for repeated use. Throw the entire cover in the washer and dryer and back on without a struggle. Many of our cheaper dog beds did not have the inner liner and it was impossible to replace the foam mattress. Not a problem with Orvis.
Did I Buy Another Bolster Dog Bed?
It’s true what they say. Your customer is only your best customer when they return and buy again. Once Fletcher came along and was big enough, be bought another Orvis bolster dog bed for him, same size, same color, embroidered name. Both boys would happily chill together while he was a wee pup. He soon grew into his bed.
Bolster dog beds seem to be fair game to play on as well! These rubber rings get a lot of pulling and chewing.
Now Makenzie comes along and there’s no question, she’ll also got an Orvis Orthopedic bolster dog bed. However being a girl we thought we could make her a little posher. After all she is a show line girl and was going to be a Mommy.
I chose a strong color with a nice contrast for her embroidered name. I think she likes it! It does not repel her shedding quite as well, but she sheds much more than her brothers. All of them are easy to run a vacuum over!
Do I Recommend Orvis Bolster Beds
I think the fact I have bought 3 should speak volumes. I love these beds. When I bought them they were around $315 each with the names embroidered. We are to add another doggie to our pack. We will undoubtedly get another Orvis bolster dog bed. For Golden Retrievers who love to sleep hard at night and prefer to snuggle in or rest heads on pillows, these beds are the bomb!
I realize the cost might be prohibitive to many but I believe they will last you a very long time. Orvis have other dog bed styles too. They have sizes from small to xtra large for dogs up to 120lbs.
More Bolster Dog Beds
During the day we have crate mats for the dogs to go to when I need space.
Our dog trainer teaches dogs to go to a place and stay there until released. This is great for when you are cooking in the kitchen and don’t want dogs under your feet. We bought bolster crate mats. The dogs are sent there when they have wet feet too. They are also used in the car for longer trips.
I bought these from Chewy and for under $30 each. They are better quality than I expected and they are huge. They’re not thick enough to sleep on at night but are perfect during the day. Just throw them in the washing machine as needed.
