The best carpets for pets are the most expensive ones. The main carpet manufacturers have all come out with carpets that are pet friendly. That simply means that they have better stain proofing and protect against the nasties all our animals present us with at times.
Is the most expensive carpet and padding, with certain guarantees, the best option when replacing your carpets? Is it worth paying the extra for the padding that has the waterproof layer on the top?
Our Carpet Replacement Research
We already know we’ll be leaving this home in 4 years time, God willing. We have 5 pets, 3 dogs and 2 cats and that’s unlikely to change. All of them should be around for the next 4 years at least. We also know our current carpet cannot last any longer. It’s already 5 years longer than it was intended for. I cannot keep it clean anymore. It is beyond help, so it has to be replaced.
The best part about that is that I get to enjoy my new carpets for 4 years and they should look good when we sell too. A win win I think.
We set off to Home Depot to check out the carpets they have. I knew I wanted to move away from a plain light carpet that showed every little speck of dirt. I wanted a darker color and one that blended well with our current decor. I also wanted a color blend rather than single color. We spent quite some time reviewing the types, warranties, time carpet would last and also the padding.
Our final choice was a 58oz plush twist blend that had a 15 year guarantee on it. The plush was denser than the frieze. I felt it was going to feel better and resist wear longer. We got a rough estimate from the carpet center girl and took a few samples home of the type we had selected. If that was the cost I would be very happy. I had a number in my mind and it was pretty close.
The best thing was there was no high pressure salesman trying to persuade me which was the best carpets for pets.
A Home Visit Carpet Company
The next job in my research was to ask a company that brings samples to your home for a competing quote. I told the salesman I wanted no more than a 15 year carpet and good but not the best pad. The best being the pad with the waterfront layer. he was told we needed stain resistant because of the pets.
While he measured the rooms, my son and I tried to find a carpet that matched my samples. While close, they were not the same. Salesman comes back with a quote. It was three (3) times the cost of the Home Depot. Scratching my head I asked him if he had any deals and other samples. While he went back to his vehicle, I took a peak at the carpet we had selected. Underneath it said 30 year carpet. Not what I asked for. We looked at all his samples, nothing less than a 30 year.
Salesman comes back and quotes the deal carpet which is 15 years and similar but he’s still at 140% of my Home Depot quote. He asked what my hesitation was. I told him I simply was not making a decision today.
The salesman left without me signing his deal, no matter how many up-sells he tried. You cannot sell me! What he realized was he had lost the sale. They pride themselves on beating prices but he did not beat Home Depot.
My Carpet Installed
The trouble with having pets is they get in the way when you are having work done at your house. For our carpet install we had one main level carpet being replaced, the rest was bedrooms and the stairs/hallway. Although the installers wanted all pets out of the way, they worked very well with me and our 5. They trusted me when I told them the 2 cats would stay out of the way, and they did. The dogs had to be kept in my office until the main level was complete. Our dogs are not allowed upstairs and were very good about complying with Mom’s orders to stay downstairs. But they would have been all over the installer in the Family Room.
The installers moved all the furniture, removed all the old carpet and installed the new with expertise and respect for our belongings and us and the pets. The carpet installed is a 58 oz carpet, very soft to walk on and more plush than our old. I love it.
The final price was very close to the store estimate given. (They did come around and measure for our new carpets before we paid, to give us a final and accurate price.)
Better or Best Carpets for Pets
The best carpets for pets Home Depot offered was pricey and I decided not to choose that. I wanted something I know would last very well, beyond my home sale. I chose a 15 year carpet with upgraded Nike pad, not the top level, the next one down. The best carpets for pets 2019 from the at home visit company was ridiculously high priced. I likely will never recommend them other than to find out the price as a comparison.
I could not find any Home Depot pet proof carpet reviews but the information provided suggested they do a very good job at repelling stains. In my humble pet owner opinion, the best carpet for pets that pee does not exist. It cannot. It absorbs the pee and no matter what you do or they say, when it comes to cats, it stays! I considered the waterproof padding but it seemed pointless if my carpet was going to get wet.
It’s why we waited so long to replace our carpets. I had a naughty cat that pee’d on the carpets and we waited until he passed before replacing them.
The best carpet for pets and high traffic are likely the most expensive ones including the pet proof brand. I was just not willing to spend that kind of money when I only intended staying here for 4 years. Given the average home owner only stays in a home for 7 years I truly wonder if it’s worth the cost. Of course no-one knows long term how well these pet proof carpets will stand up to pet stains.
Cleaning My New Carpets
Suffice to say it was less than a week before a dog silently deposited his dinner on the new carpet. We raced to get the spot cleaner out, scooped up his dinner, which was still pretty solid, and cleaned quickly. No stain, wonderful. Since then it’s been more about shedding fur and vacuuming than other stains.
Is there a best carpet for shedding dogs? I doubt it. What you really need is the best vacuum cleaner. I am in love with both my Dyson vacuums. As I say, the best carpet for dog hair is the one you vacuum daily!
The multi-color aspect of my new carpet does exactly what I wanted. To hide some of the hair and dirt. When I vacuumed this morning the family room gave me more dog hair in the canister than I expected. Clearly it hides it well but I need to vacuum that room more often! Our dogs spend the evening with us and lie on the carpet. Golden Retrievers can shed quite a lot especially in the summer when it’s warm.
I highly recommend the Dyson Animal vacuums if you have dogs that shed.
The One Negative
Of course there has to be one. The middle of the room above used to have a rug on, under our coffee table. This morning I removed it. It has spent the last couple of weeks literally walking around the room on top of the thick pile carpet.
I did look for resolutions but decided I liked the carpet color so much that the rug can go in other room. It was driving us bat crazy!
Summary: Everyones circumstances are different. Consider how long you’ll stay in the house, what your budget is, compare quotes. Consider your pets, their bad habits, your cleaning equipment and then buy the best carpets for pets based on your scenario.
